So often we speak of nature as something outside of us—something we visit, admire, or protect. But the truth is more ancient and more intimate: we are nature.

The rivers mirror our blood. The trees breathe out what we breathe in. The soil beneath our feet is not separate—it is home, it is source, it is self.

When we tend to the Earth, we are tending to our own bodies, our own breath, our own wellbeing.

🌱 Planting Endemic Species for a Thriving Ecosystem

On the Gold Coast, we’re blessed with a rich diversity of forest types, from wet eucalyptus woodlands to subtropical rainforests. But sadly, many of the trees and flowers growing here today are not endemic—a word that means native to this exact place, not just to Australia.

When we plant endemic trees and shrubs in their rightful environments, something magical happens:

🌿 They grow with ease, needing less water, care, and maintenance.

🌿 They invite native wildlife—birds, butterflies, bees—back home.

🌿 They restore balance and vitality to the soil, air, and water.

And in doing so, they help restore balance in us, too.

“To forget how to dig the earth and tend the soil is to forget ourselves.” — Mahatma Gandhi

🌼 A Simple Act with a Ripple Effect

You don’t need a sprawling backyard to make a difference. A small pot on a balcony, a shared community garden, or a morning spent planting trees with your local council can ripple into generations of healing.

The Gold Coast City Council’s Naturally GC program offers free tree planting days—a beautiful, community-led way to get your hands in the soil and help the land heal.

You’re also warmly welcome to join my family-friendly Forest Bathing sessions, where we reconnect with the Earth not through doing, but through being—listening, breathing, noticing, and remembering our place within the web of life.

🍃 Because When We Heal the Earth, We Heal Ourselves

Caring for the land nourishes not just ecosystems, but also our mental, physical and emotional health.

Gardening, planting, and being outdoors has been proven to lower stress, boost immunity, and improve mood. But beyond the science lies a deeper truth: when we care for the land, we remember who we are.

“The land is my mother. Like a mother, the land gives us protection, enjoyment, and provides for our needs—economic, social, and religious. We do not own the land, the land owns us.”

S. Knight, Aboriginal Elder

Let us walk gently. Let us plant wisely.

Let us live in a way that honours the Earth, so that she may continue to hold us, nourish us, and guide us home.
